<hi style=afpcap>The Army issued a request for a bomber with a 5,000 mile range. Boeing and Martin responded with design studies, with the former manufacturer receiving an order to construct a prototype of its model 294 in 1935. The designation XBLR-1 was allocated, although this was changed to the XB-15 before the first flight in October 1937. This lead to a upgrading which resulted in the B-19 being produced. Initially allocated the designation XBLR-2, the prototype became the XB-19. Only one example was ordered, with this being used primarily as a transport aircraft ding World War Two. </hi>
